The History of the Columbus Hawks
The Columbus Hawks homeschool basketball program was conceived in the fall of 2013 to address the need for organized sports opportunities for homeschool students in the Columbus, Indiana area. Amy and Eric Hart initiated the effort to establish the program, with Doug Sabotin volunteering to coach the inaugural boys’ team and Mike Muck leading the first girls’ team, bringing the vision to fruition.
In the spring of 2014, the founding board convened its first meeting, with each member contributing significantly to the program’s formation. Amy Hart managed communications and logistics, while Eric Hart oversaw game operations. Jamie Evans and Kristi Conrad, serving as Co-Treasurers, played a key role in securing 501(c)(3) nonprofit status for the organization. Dave Morris led fundraising initiatives, securing a generous $5,000 donation from his church to fund uniforms. Amy and Jason Dukes, drawing on their experience with another homeschool sports program, provided strategic guidance to build a strong foundation. Sunny Muck, as the first athletic director, diligently developed the Hawks’ game schedule. Through these collective efforts, the Columbus Hawks organization was established.
Registration opened in the fall of 2014, offering boys’ and girls’ teams at the 14u and 12u levels. Since its inception, the board of directors has guided the program to sustained success, expanding to serve boys and girls aged 8–18 in Columbus and surrounding communities. Many Columbus Hawks alumni have returned as coaches and mentors, further enriching the program.
The Columbus Hawks organization expresses deep gratitude to all who have contributed their time and resources to create a meaningful ministry and athletic opportunity for homeschool students in Columbus, Indiana.
